The wavy bend, suggested by the coat of arms of the Rhineland, and the four fleurs-de-lis are used to symbolize the five battle honors awarded the unit in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns during World War II. The red bendlet simulates a streamer and alludes to the two Meritorious Unit Commendations awarded the unit during that war.
Crest
The grenade refers to the 51st Ordnance Battalion, the organization from with the 51st Maintenance Battalion descended. The five tongues of the flame refer to the formation of the current unit and its five basic technical services. The interlaced sword alludes to a steadily maintained military support.
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 51st Maintenance Battalion on 5 Jan 1967. It was cancelled on 14 Jun 1974. On 16 Jun 1992, the coat of arms was reinstated, with blazon and symbolism of the crest revised.
